Cats are super cute, and we all love our cats. We consider them as full-fledged members of our family, and we want to treat them like we treat our children or other family members. But there is a huge difference between cats and the human digestive system. Many food groups are toxic for cats and can cause huge discomfort in their system.

Every cat owner should know about those food groups because no one wants to hurt their little pawy babies. So before you share your snack or meal with your pet, have a little knowledge about the foods that are toxic to them (mind you, some food groups can be very shocking)

Following are the food items that are very toxic for cats and should not be given under any circumstances;

Alcohol

Cats are just like a baby, and alcohol is deadly for them. A small amount of alcohol can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, tremors, and respiratory problems in cats. According to the report of Fetch by WebMD, two tablespoons of alcohol can put a small cat in a coma, and three spoons of alcohol can cause their death.

Chocolate and Coffee

Chocolate is also very dangerous as it contains methylxanthines, a chemical substance that causes poisoning in cats. The two main compounds of methylxanthines are Theobromine and caffeine. The symptoms of chocolate poisoning in cats include vomiting, weakness, increased respiratory rates, high temperature, seizures, cardiac arrest, and coma. According to the estimates, a small amount like 0.2 Oz can be lethal for our little furry friends. Similar to chocolate, coffee also contains caffeine which is harmful to cats. Therefore, coffee should be avoided at all costs.

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits like lemon, limes, oranges etc contain huge amounts of citric acid, which is very dangerous for cats. A small amount of citric acid can cause an upset stomach while a huge amount can cause serious digestive issues and central nervous system depression. Apart from gastrointestinal issues, cats can also encounter skin irritation due to the presence of essential oil extracts such as limonene and linalool.

Grapes and raisins

According to the reports of APSA, grapes and raisins contain unknown substances which have the tendency to cause kidney problems in cats. Therefore APSA advises avoiding giving grapes and raisins to cats.

Apart from the list of toxic foods, some foods can be dangerous for cats if they are given in abundance. The food items which should be given with caution are Avocado, peaches, dairy products.

Yes!!!! you read it right

Dairy products

Dairy products should be given with caution because cats become lactose intolerant when they mature. Therefore, giving dairy products like milk and cheese can cause digestion problems in cats.

Conclusion

To sum up, you can say that plenty of human foods is very dangerous for cats. Humans and cats are different with different dietary needs. Although the main component of the diet is protein and water other things are poles apart.

Although cats love human food and they will want you to give them a bite. A nibble of some toxic food groups can be dangerous for cats and can cause digestive issues, vitamin deficiencies, anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting, or even death. The little buddies can get huge problems and discomfort due to our lack of knowledge, so it is important for you to learn more about your cat to give them a comfortable life.
